What This Job Is

You call the rock.

Cuttings, gas and the drilling parameters come up and you read them as they come: pick the tops, say what the bit is in, and keep it in zone. The directional hand steers off what you call.

When something is going wrong down there, pressure coming up, losses, a hole that is not cleaning, you see it in the data before anybody sees it on surface, and the company man hears it from you.

At the end of it you write the report the operator and the drilling engineer act on.

Duties

• Picks formation tops off the cuttings, the gas and the drilling parameters, and calls them while the bit is turning.
• Geosteers the horizontal, keeping the wellbore in zone and telling the directional hand where to go next.
• Reads lithology and stratigraphy mile to mile and foot to foot, and says plainly what changed.
• Catches overpressure, losses and hole trouble early, and tells the company man before it costs a trip.
• Writes the geological report the operator and the drilling engineer act on.
• Oversees the mud logging side: sample quality, data that holds up, and a log nobody has to redo.

Where You'd Be

Wyoming rigs, run out of Mojo's office in Casper.

$70,000 to $120,000 a year, on experience, education, the kind of work and the days you put in the field.

20 and 10 on steady programs, set job to job on the rest. Mileage and per diem are paid to the rig and back, so getting there is not out of your pocket.

What You Need

A degree in the earth sciences and time already spent on a wellsite calling formation. H2S and First Aid. A valid driver license, because you get yourself to the rig. Mojo runs a drug-free workplace: testing before hire, at random, after an incident and on reasonable suspicion.
