Safety meetings are a half hour of "here's how to stay safe" followed by "but we don't have time for that."
We sit through PowerPoints about proper lifting techniques while the stairs to the unit are missing bolts and covered in mud.
We watch a 20-minute video about heat stress, then work straight through 100° temps because "we're behind schedule."
We sign off on confined space entry procedures, then the supervisor says "just make it quick, we don't have time to do it by the book."
We do a full JSA about hand placement on railings, then climb tanks in the dark because the flood lights are broken and nobody ordered new ones.
The Best Part?
When someone gets hurt, management stands up in the next safety meeting and says "we need YOU to be more aware and take safety seriously."
Not "we should've fixed the lights."
Not "we shouldn't have rushed the job."
Not "maybe working 18-hour shifts affects judgment."
Nope. It's always the worker's fault.
Here's The Truth
Safety meetings exist so the company can say "we trained them" when the lawyer shows up.
Real safety? That's the crew looking out for each other when the company won't.
What's the most ridiculous safety meeting you've sat through?
This industry has a lot of safety meetings.
Accountability isn’t usually one of them!
