Yeah, you're gonna lift heavy shit. You're gonna get dirty. You're gonna be outside in brutal conditions most people wouldn't last an hour in.
But if you think that's all it is, you won't last.
THE GUYS MAKING REAL MONEY OUT HERE AREN'T JUST STRONG.
They know how to:
- Read gauges and pressure systems
- Troubleshoot equipment on the fly
- Follow strict safety protocols
- Communicate clearly on the radio
- Work as part of a team under pressure
- Think critically when shit goes wrong
You're not swinging a hammer. You're operating complex machinery worth millions. You're responsible for equipment that can injure or kill if it fails. You're making decisions that can shut down an entire operation...or protect someone's life...depending on how you handle it.
One bad valve lineup. One ignored pressure reading. One rushed call around H2S or high voltage and everything changes.
So yeah, you need to be tough. But you also need to be smart, attentive, and willing to learn.
The Guys Who Wash Out?
They show up thinking it's all brute force. They don't listen. They don't ask questions. They cut corners on safety because they think the rules don't apply to them. They get someone hurt or they get sent home. Sometimes both.
The Guys Who Make It?
They show up ready to learn. They pay attention when a guy with 20 years tries to show them something. They ask questions when they don't know. They take safety seriously...not because someone's watching but because they understand what's at stake. They respect the work and the people around them.
The oilfield has fed a lot of families. Including mine. But it demands something in return.
This isn't a gym workout.
This is a skilled trade that happens to be physically demanding. Both matter. But don't mix up which one will keep you alive.
If you can't handle both, stay home.
